NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer announced today the award of a $752,000 transportation alternative grant to the city of Kingsport for the Greenbelt Eastern Extension Project.

The Greenbelt Extension Project is located in the western part of Sullivan County. It will add a 10- foot wide asphalt trail that will parallel Reedy Creek to Cleek Road where a trailhead and parking facilities will be located. The new section of trail will be approximately one mile.

“The project will provide citizens, commuters, and visitors an attractive and healthy transportation option and important links to businesses, residential areas, and health care,” Haslam said. “Improvements like this enhance the lives of Tenneseeans and make our communities more liveable.”

The transportation alternative grant is made possible through a federally funded program formerly known as transportation enhancement, and is administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through these grants, TDOT has funded more than $306 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “The program has assisted communities all over the state in their efforts to revitalize downtowns, highlight historic areas, provide alternative means of transportation, and increase opportunities for economic development.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville), Rep. Timothy Hill (R-Blountville), Rep. Jon Lundberg (R-Bristol), and Rep. Tony Shipley (R-Kingsport) represent Sullivan County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
